Chalid Said Salim stated that, PHI plays an important role in producing oil and natural gas from the region of Kalimantan which is needed to support Indonesia’s economic growth and development. In 2020 alone, PHI produced an average of about 51.7 thousand barrels of oil per day (MBOPD) and 727.5 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD), which is equivalent to about 13% and 28% of production, respectively.

Chalid also stated that in addition to producing oil and gas for the country, PHI is also consistent in implementing various Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs as a form of company’s commitment to sustainable development.

Chalid stated that CSR programs must provide economic, social, environment, and legal benefits as well as management with more integrated, directed, impactful, and accountable principles as part of the company’s business approach in promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). "PHI’s CSR programs consist of 5 sustainable pillars: Health, Education, Economy and Infrastructure, Environment, and Disaster Response,"
Chalid outlined various achievements and awards that PHI and its business units have achieved in 2020 and 2021 for its excellent programs. For example, in 2020 PHI won 5 of the 2020 Indonesia CSR Awards. In 2021, The La Tofi School of CSR presented PHI with several 2021 Nusantara CSR Awards or NCSRA, on September 15, 2021. On that occasion, PHI won 7 awards through Pertamina Hulu East Kalimantan (PHKT), Pertamina EP Tarakan Field, and Pertamina EP Bunyu Field. The latest award PHI received was the 2021 Indonesia Sustainable Development Goals Award (ISDA), which was given on 19 September 2021 to PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga (PHSS). ISDA 2021 is an annual event held by the Corporate Forum for Community Development in collaboration with the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas as the lead sector in the SDGs in Indonesia.
In the environmental sector, PHI received a Green Proper award in 2020 for its oil and gas fields. This year, PHI targets to achieve 14 Proper Beyond Compliance and 2 Proper Blue. Chalid considered these various awards as a result of PHI’s commitment to environmental management and protection while still complying with all applicable regulations, standards, and stakeholder provisions.

"These achievements show that PHI implements the principles of sustainable development by seeking a balance between human (people), environmental, and economic aspects," said Chalid.

In line with this, the Head of SKK MIGAS Representative Office for Kalimantan Sulawesi, Azhari Idris expressed his support for the actors in upstream oil and gas industry in developing the surrounding communities and in continuously improving local communities’ active involvement through local potentials and innovative programs.

The Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya Bakar, explained that social responsibility is a form of company’s feedback to the surrounding communities and environment. It is hoped to achieve the ultimate goal of communities’ self-reliance in solving the problems they face and in meeting their needs through social innovation. The next ten years is anticipated to be the most important period in the efforts to prevent disastrous climate change and to protect biodiversity.
Furthermore, Minister Siti expressed her appreciation for Pertamina as one of the companies that has been loyal in being a partner to the PROPER program, continues to improve the criteria for the developed program, and has been playing its part through significant CSR programs in Indonesia. She also explained the importance of CSR programs in sustaining a business. ”In addition to clearly contributing to sustainable development which involves economic justice growth, social development, natural resources conservation, environmental protection, and good governance,” she said in her speech.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the PROPER Board, Sudharto P. Hadi added that PROPER is not   a goal, but a means to realize business sustainability. ”How to synergize triple bottom line, not just to gain profit but also to care about the surrounding community and the planet or environment in which we do our businesses,” he said.

Companies are expected to manage the environment out of necessity rather than because they are afraid of sanctions. ”but building a system, integrating triple bottom line in strategic policies and business operations, and internalizing the behavior of all members of pre-emptive business entity,” said Sudharto.
